Easy DIY Spray for Fleas: A Natural Flea Killer that Works Immediately
Have you ever wondered how commercial pest control products affect your pet? Well, it has been found that they cause adverse reactions in cats and dogs, eventually leading to premature death. According to a report called Poisons on Pets: Health Hazards from Flea and Tick Products and issued by the Natural Resources Defense, there is a strong link between chemicals used in flea products and serious health issues in both pets and people.
According to a 2008 study by the Center For Public Integrity, at over 1,600 pet deaths related to treatment with these chemicals were reported to EPA over the last few years, as shown by an analysis of EPA pesticide incident exposure data. More importantly, some flea and tick products contain chemicals like permethrins, which are “likely to be carcinogenic to humans.”
It is worth noting that the EPA didn’t begin to review pet products for safety until the early 1990s. As noted on CPI`s website, “The EPA cannot make its own assessment because unlike the regulations directing the FDA’s approval of human products, the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act does not require pet products to undergo field trials prior to approval. So the agency can only require less extensive testing, often only on one breed of dog or cat. This makes it difficult to predict the effects on the broader population of users.” This means that the millions of Americans who buy flea and tick products believing that they were proven safe are basically lied to.
The spot-on variety sold under the brand names like Advantage ad Frontline are the most popular type of flea control products. They contain a wide range of chemicals, including permethrin, methoprene, pyriproxyfen, imidacloprid, and fipronil, all of which have been shown to cause serious health issues in animals. According to The Peta, “In 2008, the Environmental Protection Agency received more than 44,000 complaints of “adverse reactions” ranging from skin irritation to seizures and death, and has since been “pursuing a series of actions to increase the safety of spot-on pesticide products for flea and tick control for cats and dogs.”
With this being said, it becomes evident that before you purchase any of these products and use them on your pet, it is important to read the labels and look for the ingredients above. If they do contain at least one of those detrimental chemicals, stay away from them!
The good news is that there are natural alternatives to toxic chemicals flea products available, which have been already shown to be as effective and far safer.
